Google’s New ‘Genesis AI’ Will Write Entire Articles for Journalists
Google is testing a product that uses artificial intelligence technology to produce news stories, pitching it to news organizations including The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal’s owner, News Corp, according to three people familiar with the matter.
The tool, known internally by the working title Genesis, can take in information — details of current events, for example — and generate news content, the people said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the product.
One of the three people familiar with the product said that Google believed it could serve as a kind of personal assistant for journalists, automating some tasks to free up time for others, and that the company saw it as responsible technology that could help steer the publishing industry away from the pitfalls of generative A.I.
Some executives who saw Google’s pitch described it as unsettling, asking not to be identified discussing a confidential matter. Two people said it seemed to take for granted the effort that went into producing accurate and artful news stories.
According to the New York Times, Google has begun testing a new kind of AI that will produce stories for writers after only receiving a few facts.
The search engine behemoth has shown this tool to media organizations like the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post, calling it a “journalists’ personal assistant” meant to free them up for other chores.
“In partnership with news publishers, especially smaller publishers, we’re in the earliest stages of exploring ideas to potentially provide AI-enabled tools to help journalists with their work,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement to TechCrunch.
Some executives who sat in on the presentation said the plan for the product was “unsettling” and glossed over the human effort required to write “accurate and artful news stories,” the New York Times reported, citing three people familiar with the matter.
The article cites two executives who felt the tool seemed to underestimate the effort required to create accurate and well-crafted news stories. Conversely, others viewed it more as a personal aid or assistance.
Some news organizations, including The Associated Press, have long used AI to generate stories for things like corporate earnings, but these news stories represent a small fraction of the organization’s articles overall, which are written by journalists.
Google is currently experimenting with a product that utilizes artificial intelligence technology to create news articles. They are presenting this tool, known as Genesis, to various news organizations, such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, and News Corp (owner of The Wall Street Journal). According to three individuals familiar with the project, Genesis can process information about current events and generate news content. These sources spoke anonymously about the product.
One of the informants mentioned that Google perceives Genesis as a potential aid for journalists, automating certain tasks to free up time for other responsibilities. The company views this technology as a responsible innovation that could help guide the publishing industry away from the potential drawbacks of generative A.I.
Some executives who were presented with Google's proposal found it disconcerting. They preferred to remain anonymous when discussing this confidential matter. Two individuals noted that the pitch seemed to overlook the effort required to produce accurate and well-crafted news stories.
