Cabinet approves appointment of Rehmat Ali Hasnie as President NBP for three years

Mr. Rehmat Ali Hasnie appointed as President of National Bank of Pakistan Karachi, August 7, 2023: The Federal Government has appointed Mr. Rehmat Ali Hasnie as the President of National Bank of Pakistan. Mr. Hasnie has served as the Acting President of National Bank of Pakistan since May 2022 and in this period the Bank has grown to become Pakistan’s largest and strongest bank. He has been with NBP since 2010 and has headed investment banking, corporate banking, and priority sector lending. He has over 25 years of work experience in economics research, capital markets, investment banking, treasury and credit markets at various institutions in Pakistan. He is a financial markets professional with MA Degree in Development Banking from The American University (USA) and represents NBP on Board of Pakistan Mortgage Refinance Company (where he is the Chairman). He has also served on the Boards of Pakistan Mercantile Exchange Limited, First National Bank Modaraba, First Credit & Investment Bank, Agritech Ltd, and Fauji Akbar Portia Marine Terminals as a nominee director of NBP

The Finance Division stated in the summary that the position of the NBP president was advertised on February 9, 2023, and in response to the advertisement, a total of 105 applications were received till the closing date of February 24, 2023, which were scrutinised by the Shortlisting Committee headed by the finance secretary as notified by the Finance Division.

The Federal Cabinet has appointed Rehmat Ali Hasnie as President of the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP).

The Selection Committee held its meeting on July 8, 2023, for interviewing the 15 candidates cleared by the SBP; however, two of its members, Dr Aisha Ghaus Pasha, Minister of State for Finance and Revenue and Tariq Bajwa, SAPM did not attend the meeting.

Out of 15 candidates, 11 appeared for the interview (six in person and five through a Zoom video link).

The selection committee assessed the candidates on the basis of their professional knowledge and expertise, leadership qualities, communication skills, and aptitude for the job and unanimously recommended the panel of three candidates, in order of merit, for appointment against the position of president/ CEO, NBP.

Sources said that Finance Division has asked the federal cabinet to approve the names of Rehmat Ali Hasnie as the principal candidate and Muhammad Abdullah Ahmed as alternate-1, whereas, Mudassir Husain Khan as alternate-II for President/ CEO, NBP, under Section 11(3)5) of the Banks (Nationalization) Act, 1974 for a period of three years, subject to final fit and proper test (FPT) clearance by the SBP.

In case the principal candidate does not accept the offer appointment of the position may be offered to alternate-1 and in case he also fails to accept the offer of appointment,It is pertinent to note that Hasnie has been working as the acting president of NBP since May 2022 and reportedly he has been given this powerful position at the recommendation of the Pakistan People’s Party.

ذرائع کا کہنا ہے کہ فنانس ڈویژن نے وفاقی کابینہ سے کہا ہے کہ رحمت علی حسنی کو بطور پرنسپل امیدوار اور محمد عبداللہ احمد کو متبادل-1 کے طور پر منظور کیا جائے، جبکہ مدثر حسین خان کو متبادل-II کے طور پر صدر/CEO، NBP کے سیکشن 11 کے تحت منظور کیا جائے۔ (3)5) بینکس (نیشنلائزیشن) ایکٹ، 1974 کے تین سال کی مدت کے لیے، جو کہ اسٹیٹ بینک کی طرف سے حتمی فٹ اور مناسب ٹیسٹ (FPT) کلیئرنس سے مشروط ہے۔
