Pakistan Set to Export Cherries to China for First Time in Over a Decade

This year, for the first time ever, Pakistani cherries are poised to enter the Chinese market, marking an essential step in the international expansion of Pakistan’s cherry industry.

A 14-member Chinese delegation visited Gilgit-Baltistan where they signed multiple memorandums of understanding (MoUs) this week to facilitate cherry trade, 

The Pakistani exporter added that Pakistani cherries typically ripen between May and the end of July when Chinese cherries tend to be out of the market. 

The General Administration of Customs China (GACC) confirmed to the Department of Plant Protection (DPP), Ministry of National Food Security and Research, that Pakistani exporters can export cherries from Pakistan to China from DPP-registered orchards and packhouses.

This year will serve as an experiment and trial period, allowing the cherry industry in Pakistan to fine-tune the process for large-scale exports to China.

کسٹمز چائنا کی جنرل ایڈمنسٹریشن (جی اے سی سی) نے محکمہ پلانٹ پروٹیکشن (ڈی پی پی)، وزارت نیشنل فوڈ سیکیورٹی اینڈ ریسرچ کو تصدیق کی کہ پاکستانی برآمد کنندگان ڈی پی پی کے رجسٹرڈ باغات اور پیک ہاؤسز سے پاکستان سے چین کو چیری برآمد کرسکتے ہیں۔

Pakistani media reports that with the reopening of the Khunjerab Pass in April and the completion of a bilateral phytosanitary pact in November of last year, Pakistan may now export cherries to China.

The pandemic had forced the closure of the pass, the sole land route connecting the two countries, for nearly three years. The importation of cherries from Gilgit-Baltistan and other parts of Pakistan has been approved by Chinese officials.

Because the fruit is perishable, Pakistani cherry must be cold-treated at a certain temperature for a predetermined amount of time before being sent to China. This is now a hurdle. Gilgit-Baltistan also lacks the infrastructure necessary to handle the fruit. Growers may need to increase the number of cherry types they cultivate or create a long-term.

Because of the severe weather brought on by the cold and high altitude, the Khunjerab Pass—the highest paved border crossing in the world—was only open from April to November in the past. Nevertheless, according to recent reports, there are plans to keep the pass open all year round, and the Chinese government has sent out snowplow teams to guarantee that traffic moves freely even in the winter. It is anticipated that this initiative will further improve the strategic partnership between China and Pakistan by promoting trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.
